Vegan Falafel Patties

I made some really yummy falafels a few weeks ago, after whipping up an eggplant hummus recipe for a guest post. (coming soon on one of my fav blogs and I’ll let you know once it’s up!) I had an exorbitant amount of freshly made hummus and I knew there was no way I could eat all of it within the week, so I threw in some bread crumbs, onions and spices, and pan-seared a few falafel patties. They turned out really delicious!

First of all, what is a falafel? A falafel is a patty made from ground chic peas, aka garbanzo beans.¬†Falafels can be baked, pan-friend or even deep-fried, and sometimes other beans may be added or incorporated. It’s a Middle Eastern dish, so they often contain different spices and may be topped with various sauces including tahini sauce or a Greek cucumber-yogurt sauce. They are really yummy warm but can also be enjoyed cold for leftovers. They are a perfect way to pack protein and fiber into your meal.

Pan-seared Falafels

Prep Time: 20 min

Cook Time: 10 min

  • 1 1/2 c. homemade hummus
  • 1/2 c. nutritional yeast
  • 2/3 c. whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbs. lemon juice
  • 1/2 med sweet onion, diced
  • 1 tbs. smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flake
  • 1 tbs. extra virgin olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste


Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir to incorporate.

Use your hands to form 1″ thick patties.

Set large non-stick skillet on med/high heat. Drizzle olive oil in pan and add falafel patties.

Pan-fry for 5 minutes or until browned and flip. Pan-fry other side for another 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and serve over a salad, in a pita pocket, or enjoy plain or dipped in your favorite sauce! So yumm!

So today was my first day back from vacation, and my mother greeted me with something super sweet and thoughtful–a present! What kind of girl doesn’t love presents from her mama dearest? ;) Plus, my mom knows me so well, and I know anything she picks out I’ll almost certainly adore. And this time… she nailed it!

The cutest green flip-flops I’ve ever seen! And you all know how much I love green shoes :) Well green in general really–it’s just my color. These are made by a company called Lindsay-Phillips¬†<— love the name too! And here is the best part… the centerpiece snaps off and is interchangeable! How cool is that? They have all of these super cute snaps you can pick from.

This company doesn’t know that I exist, but I still encourage you to go check out their footwear if you get a chance. They have some sweet sales going on and this pair of flip-flops is marked down to $15.99 on their website (shhhh, don’t tell my mother, she paid $24.00 for them at an art convention!) ;)

Tonight I had my girlfriend Sarah over for dinner and we did a dry-run on her make-up to practice for her wedding this weekend. She looked so stunning, and I can’t wait until the big day! We are having a big bridesmaid slumber party at my place the night before the wedding, so that should be a blast too. Lots of stuff going on this week to keep me busy! Here is a picture of us at the last wedding we went to together. Whew, what a night! ;)

    Oh, if only I could jump right through my computer screen and devour that gorgeous falafel salad. *sigh* I'll just have to make it myself, I guess!

    I have such fond memories of falafel growing up. My mom and I would love to get falafel gyros together, and I remember loving the texture and heartiness. I know people say this a lot in the blogosphere, but I really am going to make these soon. Thank you for the inspiration!

    I love that you pan fried these with just a light drizzle of oil. Most recipes call for deep frying and I always feel like it's totally defeating the purpose to deep fry something healthy like that! The picture of your salad looks so yummy & your sandals are super cute! Very creative :)
